Be Who You Were Created to Be 1

Psalm 139:13-14 says:

For you created my inmost being;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made…

At our recent trip to the Outcry Tour, Brian Houston, the lead pastor of Hillsong Church, was the main speaker. You can read my Outcry post for details on his talk.

At the concert we received a copy of his (I believe) newest book “Live Love Lead”. Being the slow reader I am, I’ve only gotten about 50 pages in, but it’s been really great so far.

In one of the first few chapters Brian talks about being comfortable in your own skin, with who God made you and called you to be, just like be how you feel in your favorite pair of jeans or shoes.

Honestly, that’s something I personally struggle with. Figuring out just who God has called me to be. What’s His purpose for my life? Obviously it includes being a husband and a father – two of the greatest things I could ever have been called to be, but what else does He have for me? What else does He have for all of us? It’s a tough question to answer at times.

But He has gifted us with talents and abilities. He uniquely created each one of us, as Psalm 139 states.

Brian makes a comment that God has called you to be you – not a copy of someone else. He needs you to live using your talents and abilities to accomplish the works He has created for YOU to do.

I am blessed to be married to someone entirely comfortable in their own skin. Danielle is one of the strongest, most confident people I know. She can throw something together to wear that others would be terrified to put together and she can ROCK it (of course I’m just a little biased). Or just decide, “hey today I feel like wearing purple hair”, and she looks gorgeous doing it.

But more important than her physical confidence, she’s emotionally and spiritual confident. She’s confident in the things she believes and standing on her principles. And I absolutely love her for that, among a host of other things.

She’s helped crack my shell a bit, but there’s still a ways to go.

And even as I have a ways to go into stepping into all that God has for me, maybe that’s where you find yourself as you’re reading this post. Let me encourage you to step out, listen to God’s voice and step into who He has destined you to be.

There is only one you – only one. Kind of mind boggling that the God of the universe took His time to uniquely design you and gift you with the abilities you possess.

Don’t waste those talents and abilities.

Be you. Be who God created you to be.

    I’m enjoying the book, too.
    I think we all struggle sometimes knowing or not knowing where we belong in God’s plan.
