If you’re familiar with the life of Jesus, you may know that His first miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding.
“Jesus said, “Is that any of our business, Mother—yours or mine? This isn’t my time. Don’t push me.” She went ahead anyway, telling the servants, “Whatever he tells you, do it.” Six stoneware water pots were there, used by the Jews for ritual washings. Each held twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus ordered the servants, “Fill the pots with water.” And they filled them to the brim.”
John 2:4-7 MSG
I wanted to keep this post short so I have a question for my readers. Is there any significance to the fact that these jars were used for ritual washings? Seems odd to me, but maybe I’m missing something.
Thoughts?
I think you might be on to something here. Using the jars for anything other than ritualistic cleansing would defile them, but I doubt Jesus cared, and besides, it was a great way to make a statement without saying a thing. Shrewd!
He did have a knack for ruffling religious feathers 🙂
Not to say Jesus didn’t care about ritual. Just that he cared more about his mother and serving people in ways that were controversial and outside the box.
And I love that He honored His mother. What Momma says goes 🙂
Is it possible that they were used because they were right there, conveniently, and a perfect source for the miracle he was about to preform. What mamma say does go so he had to act quick.
I’d say that’s very possible. I just think maybe people would have balked because they were used for washings.
