How to Install iOS 7 Beta 1 2

Monday night I successfully installed iOS 7 Beta 1. To my surprise, it was relatively straightforward.

So, for all you brave iSouls out there, here is my step by step guide.

Warning: I take 0% responsibility for any issues this causes with your phone. Just needed to get that out of the way. Here. We. Go.

  1. First, you’ll need to determine what model of  iPhone you have. See Apple’s Chart for more information.
  2. Once you’ve determined your model, you’ll need to download the appropriate “.ipsw” file on your computer. This is the file that contains the OS update software. Check this site out to find the appropriate file.
  3. Remember where you downloaded the file.
  4. Back up your phone. No, really. BACK UP YOUR PHONE!
  5. Plug your phone into the computer.
  6. In iTunes, click on your phone in the left navigation.
  7. You’ll see something similar to this: iPhone
  8. On a Mac, hold down the Option key and click “Check for Update”. On Windows, hold down the Shift key and click “Check for Update.”
  9. Browse to your “.ipsw” file and select it.
  10. Allow the process to run its course.

That should be it. This process may or may not work, and there are no guarantees you’ll be able to downgrade to iOS 6, so proceed at your own risk.

But, iOS 7 is pretty amazing, and in my day+ of use it seems very stable for a first beta.

Having seen this enough times: please do not install this on your primary phone. Even developers that do ios development for a living don’t do this. But an old 4s you might have laying around because you upgraded phones recently, or a cheap recent iPod Touch will do to trick 🙂

I’m excited to try out ios 7 but saving my pennies for a new iPod Touch. I have 2 iPhone 3GSs laying around but they won’t run iOS 7 and that makes me sad.

Ryan, good point! I’m a risk taker, myself. Plus I have my Best Buy Geek Squad plan as my “ace in the hole” so to speak.

Seriously, folks. Ryan knows what he’s talking about!
