Dear Fitzy (4th Birthday) 3

Dear Fitzy,

I wanted to write you a post on your 4th birthday to have something for us both to look back on someday.

I can’t believe you’re 4 already. I know it’s cliche, but time really does fly. Dear time, please slow down, because before we both know it, you’ll be out the door, moving out on your own.

We waited so long for you. We had a miscarriage that really rocked my world. Such incredible pain and heartache. And then we got a word that you would join us eventually. And we waited, and waited. Finally when it seemed like it was never going to happen, we found out we were pregnant with you. We were scared but so thrilled too.

I was so scared I would pass out when you were born 🙂 That was one of my main focuses. Don’t pass out and be there for mom as best I could. And I made it! That will seem silly some day, but that was a big deal at the time.

Having you in our lives has been a blessing more than I can ever imagine. I love that you love to cuddle together and watch shows and movies with me. Your new favorite show is Chopped. Who knows if that will even be on when you’re older, but you love it. We’ve gone through lots of phases of movie watching together, and I’m looking forward to our upcoming movie trips.

Speaking of movie trips, you love to bring up how dad got pulled over by a police officer on our first trip. We went to see Night at the Museum on New Years Day 2015. That made for a crazy adventure!

You also like to tell about how dad hit the raccoon in our driveway earlier this year! Exciting stuff. And then we caught two more. Crazy! And you helped us take them to new homes.

And just so you remember, you basically just decided one day that you wanted to wear big boy undies (embarrassing, I know) and decided to go on the potty pretty much all by yourself. We were all a little shocked about that but so proud of you too.

Here are some of the other things I love about you and I hope you remember:

  • I love that you call me “Big Hairy Boss”
  • I love what a kind heart you have
  • I love how you light up the room when people see you. Especially at church. You have so many friends there.
  • I love that you like to cuddle with me
  • I love that you make me feel loved no matter what kind of day I’ve had
  • I love what a big brother you are to Enoch
  • I love how you like to help so much, whether it’s doing dishes or cooking or helping Grandpa out in the yard. You’re a great helper.
  • I love when you say I’m the best dad of your whole life
  • Most of all…I just love you, and I hope you always know that.

Part of me is sad that I’ve missed out on chunks of your life when I’ve gone through dark times, but I’m glad those times happened early in your life and you probably won’t remember them too well. It makes me happy when you say you’re so glad that I don’t feel sick like when we were at the beach a couple of years ago.

I am very blessed to have you as a son. I couldn’t imagine life any other way. You’re helping me be a better person. I’m sorry for the times I get snippy. I’m sorry for the times I’ve been too wrapped up in my own world to notice yours. But I know that you still love me anyway, and I’m so thankful for that.

For your 4th birthday, I hope you can look back and know how much we loved you and still love you. More importantly I hope you never ever forget how much God loves you so very much and how special you are to him.

I love you so much!

Dad (aka “Big Hairy Boss”)

Here’s a picture of us all celebrating your big day!

I love it!! What a great idea to be writing to him now, even though he can’t read it yet or fully appreciate it. Wish I had done that on my son’s 4th birthday. Will have to catch him on another one
