Tonight Danielle and I went out on a date to celebrate our anniversary. It’s the first time the two of us have been out alone in I can’t even remember how long.
The date started with a trip to my favorite Chinese place – The Dumpling House in Wellsboro. After a scrumptious dinner of Chicken with Curry sauce, we headed over to the Arcadia to get our seats, which were unfortunately located in the Dinner and a Movie theater, which is my least of the 4 screens.
Before I get into my “review,” I must say that I had reservations when I first heard about / saw trailers for WALL•E. It looked like a bold departure for Pixar, and I thought it might be their first movie that would flop. While I don’t think it’s going to flop, I still think it’s going to be one of those movies where you really like it, or you just don’t quite get it.
The move started out pretty slowly, following WALL•E around his daily tasks of cleaning up the mess that humans left on the Earth (they just had to get their Green plug in there). Don’t worry though. We’ll have to be around a lot longer to pile up all the trash left for WALL•E to pick up. But I digress…
As I said, the beginning was slow, but we do get to see glimpses of WALL•E’s personality, and see why he is so lovable. Then EVE shows up to search for vegetation, and WALL•E falls in love. However, EVE doesn’t return the feelings at first, in fact, she tries to blow him away several times. However, she does warm to WALL•E over time.
Fast forward and WALL•E and EVE are back on the ship Axiom where thousands (millions?) of humans are located deep in space. Apparently they all got lazy and suffered from bone loss due to gravity, because EVERYONE is obese, and all they do is float around in their little hover chairs all day long, while robots wait on them hand and foot. Kind of like a 700-year long cruise, except nobody is doing any sort of physical activity.
I won’t get into all the nitty gritty of what happens next, but this was the part of the movie that really hooked me. During the whole movie, there were little kids making comments, as they are prone to do, but there was a scene close to the end of the movie where you could have heard a pin drop due to its dramatic nature.
So, WALL•E had a little bit of everything – comedy, very little dialog, personable / lovable robots, a trigger-happy love interest, drama, and amazing animation. Definitely one of my favorite movies of the year. Go see it!
